About the Coat of Arms of Kutaisi

The objects and colors (vert, azure, or), used in the Coat of Arms, express the historical past, dignity, wealth of the residents of Kutaisi and the historical power of the region. Vert and the sails furled lymphad (antique ship) embody the hope for the future and aspiration to the noble goal. Usage of basic colors - vert, azure, has the historical ground and is based on the historical documents of the XVIII-XIX centuries and symbolically embody historical past, dignity, nobility, wealth and historical power of the residents of the region. The basic source of the colors is the Coats of Arms, created by Vakhushti Batonishvili, where Imereti region is depicted with vert; inasmuch as the Kingdom of Colchis (Imereti - the part of the historical Kingdom of Colchis, the Capital - Aia, Kutaia, Kutaisi) is related to the legend of Argonauts, that is the Golden Fleece, which is basically fixed with or on the azure field in the heraldry of the Western Europe, thus azure has been selected, which also reflects arrival of Argonauts by sea to the Kingdom of Colchis (see the Coats of Arms of Poti, Abasha and Tsalenjikha). The non-heraldic objects - the Golden Fleece and the sails furled lymphad, embody this historical past. In addition, the Golden Fleece expresses the "heavenly lamb" - the spiritual and intellectual sun in the Christian symbols. That is, these objects express Kutaisi, as one of the spiritual and intellectual pillows of Georgia, the Diocese city, devotion and intellectual merits of the residents of the region. The four-towered castellated (castle-shape) or city crown with semi-open, depicted above the shield, express the additional identification means, defying the status and affiliation of the Municipality and differ from other Municipality Coats of Arms (as usual, the Municipal crowns are triple-towered and argent), inasmuch as Kutaisi was the Capital of Georgia in the early medieval centuries. Also the vine ornament, mantling the shield and the motto "Kutaisi", depicted below the shield, express the additional identification means.
